Classic facials for different skin types

Different skin types need different skincare concepts to glow again

Skin is as individual as the person it belongs to. In cosmetics, we distinguish between different skin types, which are made up of our skin color/type, texture, elasticity, firmness, moisture and the oil content of the skin. On top of that, there are of course various skin conditions – because our skin changes with stress, changes in the weather, hormonal fluctuations and age. Our basic skin type is genetically determined, but we can influence and improve it with individually tailored treatments and the right skincare products. The basic skin types are a good guide for all of us, but you always have to keep in mind that the classification is rarely completely clear-cut, as mixed forms are usually present.

Different skin types on the face

But which skin types are there, exactly?

Normal skin

Characteristics: normal-sized pores, rare blemishes, normal sheen, no flaking, low skin sensitivity

Treatment goal: Optimal moisture levels, extraction of comedones (whiteheads or blackheads)

Here is a classic skincare recommendation: cleansing milk or a mild cleansing gel/foam, no harsh cleansers, a pore-refining toner, mechanical or enzymatic exfoliation, serums, O/W emulsions and, depending on skin condition/age, lipid-rich serums and creams. Be sure to use sun protection!

Dry skin

Characteristics: dry, low in oil. Normal to fine pores. Low sebaceous gland activity. Fine, dry flakes in the T-zone, dull to chapped skin. Firm, open comedones, often milia. Tendency toward a dry scalp, often sensitive skin

Treatment goal: balance out the lack of oil and moisture, ease the feeling of tightness, reduce skin irritation, extractions

Skincare recommendation: mild cleansing, no mechanical exfoliants, alcohol-free toner, lipid-containing serums, lipid-rich creams, be sure to use sun protection

Oily/greasy skin, which is divided into two types:

Seborrhea oleosa

Characteristics: larger pores on the face and décolleté, prone to blemishes across the entire facial area. Overactive sebaceous glands. Papules, pustules, large, soft comedones, frequently acne. Oily, greasy shine. Often poor blood circulation and low sensitivity. Tendency toward hair and scalp that get oily quickly

Treatment goal: Moderate oil reduction, thorough extractions, reducing inflammation

Skincare recommendation: antibacterial cleansing gel and toner, emulsion-based moisturizing products, hydrating serums, oil-free serums, be sure to use sun protection

Seborrhea sicca (dry oily skin)

Characteristics: low in moisture, sebum flakes. Enlarged pores in the T-zone and rather normal-sized pores on the rest of the face. Prone to blemishes in the T-zone. Comedones, possibly milia, less often pustules. Partly oily shine, partly normal to dry and dull. Normal blood circulation, often sensitive skin.

Treatment goal: Soothing irritation, hydration, reducing inflammation. Extractions, reducing the buildup of dead skin cells (keratinization)

Skincare recommendation: Mild cleansing gel, toner. Enzyme exfoliant, hydrating serums, gels, be sure to use sun protection

Combination skin

Characteristics: different zones with different skin types. Dry as well as oily/greasy areas. Open and closed comedones, papules, dryness.

Treatment goal: Hydration, extractions

Skincare recommendation: Cleansing milk or a mild cleansing gel/foam, no harsh cleansers, a pore-refining toner, mechanical or enzymatic exfoliation, serums, O/W emulsions, be sure to use sun protection
