Understanding stubborn pigmentation disorders and lightening them in a targeted way: melasma treatment at Skinthetics Cosmetics
Melasma is a form of skin hyperpigmentation linked to an individual predisposition and often hormone-related, which usually appears symmetrically on the face – most often on the forehead, cheeks, and upper lip. As a chronic skin condition, it can be lightened in a targeted way and stabilized in the long term with the right methods – however, complete, permanent elimination is usually not possible. Setting honest expectations is part of our standard.
At our Skinthetics Cosmetics institute in Düsseldorf-Oberkassel, we treat melasma with a multi-stage therapeutic approach: from the Cosmelan method, a particularly effective depigmenting treatment, to the No More Dark Spots Facial and structured home care. In doing so, we work with treatment concepts directed by medical specialist Dr. Lucija Grittern – a crucial difference from purely cosmetic beauty salons, because melasma is first and foremost a medical diagnosis.

What our patients say
Important information about melasma and its treatment
What is melasma and what causes it?
Melasma – also known as chloasma – is a form of skin hyperpigmentation linked to an individual predisposition, in which melanocytes (pigment-producing cells) become locally overactive and lead to visible pigment spots on the face. Typical locations are the forehead, cheeks, upper lip, and chin; less often, the forearms or décolleté are affected. Women are affected much more often than men.
The most common triggers are hormonal factors – such as pregnancy, taking the birth control pill, or hormone therapy – UV radiation as the decisive trigger, as well as genetic predisposition and certain medications. Since melasma is a chronic pigmentation disorder, the therapy aims at lightening and stabilization, not at a complete cure.
What treatment methods are available for melasma?
At our cosmetic institute, we rely on a coordinated treatment concept with several methods that can be combined:
1. Cosmelan method:
In our experience, the Cosmelan method is one of the most effective depigmenting treatments for pronounced melasma. A professional mask is applied at the institute, followed by intensive home care over several months. You can find all the details on how it is carried out on the Cosmelan page of the Skinthetics practice. Cost: starting at €950 including the home pack for the first month.
2. LaseMD:
The fractional thulium laser creates very fine microchannels in the skin, improving the targeted absorption of brightening active ingredients into deeper layers of the skin. An option that is gentle on the skin, with short downtime – particularly useful for moderate melasma or as a complement to Cosmelan therapy. We offer LaseMD treatment at the Skinthetics medical practice, which is located in the same building.
3. No More Dark Spots Facial:
This pigment facial combines vitamin C, hydroxyphenoxy propionic acid, and salicylic acid into an effective accompanying treatment for hyperpigmentation. Useful as a complementary measure within a structured therapy. Cost: starting at €125.
4. Structured home care with SkinCeuticals and QMS Medicosmetics:
No component is more essential than this one. Without consistent home care – daily, with brightening active ingredients and SPF 50 – no pigmentation treatment will have a lasting effect.
Which method suits which type of melasma?
The choice of the right method always depends on your individual findings. As an initial guide:
- Pronounced, stubborn melasma on the face:
→ The Cosmelan method as our first choice
- Mild to moderate melasma or maintenance after Cosmelan:
→ LaseMD sessions with targeted delivery of active ingredients (including tranexamic acid)
- Sun spots or mild post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation:
→ No More Dark Spots Facial in combination with structured home care
- Melasma during pregnancy:
→ No active treatment during pregnancy or while breastfeeding
Which method is right for you depends on your skin type, the depth of the melasma (epidermal, dermal, or mixed), and how your skin responds individually. A well-founded consultation at the institute is the basis of every treatment decision – together, we look at what suits you.
Sun protection – the most important pillar of any melasma treatment
UV radiation is the most significant trigger for melasma. Without consistent sun protection, no treatment will have a lasting effect – this is not a recommendation but a prerequisite.
The most important measures at a glance:
- Apply SPF 50 daily – even in winter and on cloudy days
- Mineral sunscreen with iron oxides also protects against HEV light (high-energy visible light, mainly from sunlight and, to a lesser extent, from screens), which can likewise worsen melasma
- Reapply every two hours during outdoor activities
- Wear a head covering during periods of intense sun
- Avoid tanning beds altogether
We are happy to advise you at the institute on suitable sunscreens from the SkinCeuticals range.
How long does melasma treatment take?
Melasma treatment is not a one-off measure but a multi-stage therapy over several months. With the Cosmelan method, consistent home care for 6-9 months is necessary after the initial treatment at the institute until a visible plateau in results is reached. In our experience, Cosmelan is one of the most effective methods for preventing relapses, as it aims to downregulate pigment production by the melanocytes. With LaseMD, you can expect a first visible improvement after 8-12 weeks, that is, from about the third session. After that, lifelong maintenance therapy is advisable.
To be honest: melasma tends to relapse – especially with sun exposure or hormonal changes. The success of the treatment depends to a considerable extent on your cooperation: home care, SPF 50, and consistently avoiding triggers are at least as important as the treatment itself.

The treatment concept of our cosmetic institute is directed by our experienced medical specialist, Dr. Lucija Grittern – setting a standard that purely cosmetic salons cannot offer.
The process: how your melasma treatment at Skinthetics Cosmetics works
Preparation for treatment
At your first visit to our institute at Cimbernstraße 27a in Düsseldorf-Oberkassel, we begin with a thorough skin analysis. We classify your melasma (epidermal, dermal, or mixed), assess its severity, and take a detailed history – including possible triggers, previous treatments, medications, and hormonal factors. On this basis, we create an individual, multi-stage treatment plan. If there are medically relevant findings, you have direct access to Dr. Grittern at the Skinthetics practice next door. Of course, we inform you comprehensively at the outset about the length of therapy, realistic expectations, and the essential accompanying measures.
Performing the treatment
The specific procedure depends on the method chosen:
Cosmelan method: A single mask is applied at the institute (duration: 45-60 minutes). Afterward, you receive detailed instructions for several months of home care – you can also find all the information on this on the Cosmelan page of the Skinthetics practice.
LaseMD: Several sessions of about 30-45 minutes each, 3-4 weeks apart. The fractional thulium laser creates very fine microchannels and, immediately afterward, delivers brightening active ingredients such as tranexamic acid deep into the skin. A first visible improvement usually appears from the third session.
No More Dark Spots Facial: A 60-75-minute facial treatment with targeted active ingredients for pigmentation that brightens and soothes the complexion.
During all treatments, we carefully monitor how your skin reacts and adjust the intensity if necessary.
Aftercare
Aftercare is not an extra – it is an integral part of successful treatment. Daily sun protection with SPF 50, ideally with iron oxides to protect against visible light, is an essential part of your skincare routine. In addition, we recommend brightening and barrier-strengthening active ingredients such as vitamin C, niacinamide, and tranexamic acid – available in the SkinCeuticals range at our institute. Avoid triggers such as tanning beds, intense sun exposure, and products that irritate the skin. After a Cosmelan treatment, consistent use of the Cosmelan home care kit for a full 6 months is essential: it is intended to secure the brightening and regulate pigment production – this can reduce the risk of recurrence. In the long term, we recommend maintenance therapy with regular skincare facials and continuous home care. Our team is always available if you have questions.

What are the before-and-after results of melasma treatment?
After a structured therapy, many of our clients report significantly lightened pigment spots, a more even complexion, and improved skin texture. With the Cosmelan method, a first visible lightening often appears after 4-6 weeks; the optimal result is reached after 6-9 months. With LaseMD, a first clear improvement is usually visible after 8-12 weeks – that is, after about the third session.
Important to know: complete, permanent elimination of the pigmentation disorder is usually not possible with melasma. Results depend largely on the depth of the melasma, your consistent home care, and daily sun protection. We advise you transparently – so that your expectations are realistic from the start.

FAQ – Frequently asked questions about melasma treatment in Düsseldorf
How much does melasma treatment cost in Düsseldorf?
Costs vary depending on the method: the No More Dark Spots Facial is available starting at €125, LaseMD starting at €320 per session, and the Cosmelan method starting at €950 (including the home pack for the first month). We set the exact price based on your individual treatment plan.
What is the difference between melasma and ordinary pigment spots?
Melasma is a pigmentation disorder linked to an individual predisposition and often hormone-related, with a characteristically symmetrical distribution on the face. Ordinary pigment spots such as sun spots or age spots usually develop in isolated spots due to UV radiation and are generally less resistant to treatment than melasma.
Can melasma be removed completely?
No. Melasma is a chronic skin condition with a high tendency to relapse. The aim of treatment is significant lightening and long-term stabilization – complete, permanent elimination is usually not possible.
Which method works best for melasma?
In our experience, Cosmelan is one of the most effective depigmenting methods for pronounced melasma – it aims to downregulate pigment production by the melanocytes and prevent relapses. For milder forms or for maintenance, LaseMD sessions with tranexamic acid and the No More Dark Spots Facial are sensible options. We determine together during the consultation which method is right for you.
How long does melasma treatment take to show visible results?
With the Cosmelan method, a first lightening often appears after 4-6 weeks; the optimal result is reached after 6-9 months. With LaseMD, an improvement can be seen after the third session (that is, after about 8-12 weeks).
Can I have melasma treatment during pregnancy?
No. During pregnancy and while breastfeeding, we do not perform active pigmentation treatments – partly because melasma is hormonally intensified during this phase. We recommend planning to start treatment after you have finished breastfeeding.
Does melasma come back after treatment?
That is possible. Melasma tends to relapse, especially with sun exposure, hormonal changes, or inadequate home care. Consistent sun protection and a continuous skincare routine significantly reduce the risk of renewed pigmentation disorders.
What role does sun protection play in melasma treatment?
Sun protection is the single most important factor in melasma therapy. Without daily SPF 50 – ideally with iron oxides to protect against visible light – no treatment will have a lasting effect. UV radiation is the main trigger for melasma and can provoke relapses.
Does health insurance cover the cost of melasma treatment?
No. Melasma treatments are considered aesthetic medical services and are not reimbursed by either statutory or private health insurance.
